Closing the season well: tips for coaches and team managers

August 12, 2025·4 min read

The final whistle of the last match doesn't mean the season is over. There's still plenty to do: evaluate, wrap up, plan for next year. Those who do this well build on the best of this season and avoid the mistakes of last year.

Evaluate the season

Organize a short evaluation meeting with players and staff. What went well? What could be better? Which goals were achieved, which weren't? Keep it constructive and open. Use the attendance data and statistics from the season as a basis for the conversation — numbers make discussions more objective.

Financial wrap-up

  • Prepare a final settlement of the team treasury.
  • Make sure all outstanding fines have been collected.
  • Decide what happens to the remaining balance: carry it to next season or distribute it.
  • Provide a transparent overview to the team.

Organizing the end-of-season event

A shared season closing — a dinner, drinks, or an awards event — ends the year on a positive note. Recognize special achievements: most present player, top scorer, most improved player. A small token of appreciation motivates for the next season.

Preparing for next season

Record the lessons of this season while they're still fresh. Which rules need to be adjusted? Which roles need to be handed over? Write a short note that the new team manager or coach can use at the start of next season.

A well-concluded season is the foundation for a strong new beginning. Take the time to close it properly — your team deserves it.
