Team activities off the field: why and how?
A close-knit team performs better on the field. And a close-knit team is built not only through training and matches, but also through what you do together outside of them. Team activities strengthen interpersonal relationships, build trust, and make it easier to play for each other during a game.
Why team building works
Players who know each other well communicate better on the field. They understand each other's playing style, know when the other needs space, and dare to call each other out on mistakes. That starts with trust — and trust is built by experiencing things together.
Ideas for team activities
- Season opener or closing: eat together and reflect on the season.
- Sports outing: karting, bowling, or an escape room — accessible and fun.
- Barbecue or team dinner: informal time together works well for team spirit.
- Volunteer day: doing something good together strengthens group feeling.
- Game night or quiz: low-intensity but still connecting.
How to plan a team activity
Use the team app or calendar to plan an activity. Poll which dates work best and what kind of activity people prefer. Appoint an organizer and communicate clearly about costs, location, and time. Keep the barrier low: not everyone needs to be excited, but make sure it's accessible.
Invest a few times per season in an activity off the field and you'll find the team gets stronger — not just on paper, but in practice too.
