Better communication in your sports team: here's how

May 12, 2025·4 min read

How many conflicts in sports teams arise because someone didn't know something? "I didn't see that message." "Nobody told me training was moved." "I thought we started at 7pm, not 6:30pm." Poor communication is one of the most common causes of frustration in sports teams — and also one of the easiest problems to solve.

The problem: too many channels

Most teams communicate through multiple channels at once. There's a WhatsApp group, but some people are also in a Signal group. The coach sometimes sends an email. Someone posts something on Instagram. And then nobody knows where the official information is. This leads to missed messages, confusion, and frustration.

The solution: one official channel

Choose one channel that is the official source for team communication. All relevant information — training times, changes, attendance, fines — goes through that channel. Other channels may exist for social interaction, but officially there is only one. Communicate this clearly to all team members.

Make expectations clear

Set clear expectations about how and when communication happens. How long should it take for players to respond to an attendance request? How far in advance are training times communicated? What do you do if you miss an activity? When everyone knows what is expected of them, there are fewer misunderstandings.

Use notifications smartly

Push notifications are a powerful tool to keep players informed without them having to actively check an app or group. Think of a reminder the day before training, a message when an activity is changed, or a notification when a new fine is issued. This increases engagement without raising the barrier.

Also communicate positively

Communication in sports teams isn't just about logistics and rules. Celebrate successes too: a won match, a player who broke their attendance record, a fully paid fine pot. Positive communication strengthens team spirit and makes players proud of their team.

Invest in clear, consistent communication and you'll see that many other problems disappear on their own. A team that communicates well is a team that works together.
