Why you should track team statistics
Statistics aren't just for professional sports teams. Even for amateurs, numbers provide valuable insights that help improve the team. Who is most often present? Who has the most fines? Which activities have the highest turnout? In this article, we explain why tracking statistics is worthwhile and how to approach it practically.
Which statistics are useful for amateur teams?
You don't need to be a data specialist to track useful statistics. For most sports teams, the following figures are most valuable:
- Attendance percentage per player: who is present how often?
- Attendance per activity: which training sessions or matches attract the most players?
- Fines per player: who has the most violations?
- Fine payment status: how many fines are still open?
- Development across seasons: is attendance improving year over year?
How statistics help with decisions
Suppose you notice that Thursday training consistently has lower attendance than Tuesday training. It might be worth investigating whether the time or day is the problem and adjusting it. Or you see that one player was 100% present the entire season — a perfect moment for a pat on the back and recognition in the team.
Statistics also help when having difficult conversations. If a player thinks they're almost always present, but the numbers show something different, you have an objective basis for the conversation. This is much more powerful than a feeling or a memory.
Make statistics visible to the team
Statistics are most effective when the whole team has access to them. When players can see their own attendance percentage, they're often more motivated to keep it high. A bit of healthy competition — who has the highest attendance this season? — can significantly increase engagement.
Collecting statistics automatically
Manually tracking statistics in a spreadsheet is time-consuming and error-prone. A smart attendance app calculates statistics automatically based on the entered data. This way, you always have a current and reliable overview, without extra effort.
Start simple: track attendance and let an app calculate the statistics. You'll quickly find that these insights help you make better decisions as a coach and team manager.
